Penn State York will be closed for regular business for the semester break beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan 3, 2017.
Designed to help high school students prepare to take the SAT, Penn State York’s SAT preparation course offers a variety of test-taking strategies. The course will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on four consecutive Saturdays from Jan. 28 to Feb. 18 in Room 112 of the Edward M. Elias Science Building on the York campus.
Applications for the Penn State Secondary Mathematics Noyce Scholarship Program must be submitted by Jan. 18, 2017. The competitive renewable scholarships will provide $19,000 per year for eligible students’ last two years of college.
Honoring Maddie Hill is something that members of Penn State York Benefiting THON and the campus community knew was the right thing to do. Hill, 19, who died in June after battling cancer three times, will be honored at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 in a ceremony held between the women’s and men’s basketball games in the campus gym in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center.
Celebrating children and their rights is something that the Community Relations Council (CFR) Club at Penn State York takes very seriously. The celebration from 4 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the Conference Center is free and open to the public.
Penn State York’s veterans organization, Student Veterans of America (SVA), York Chapter, is sponsoring a Toys for Tots drive on campus. New, unopened, and unwrapped toys will be collected through Dec. 9. The toys, for children ages newborn through 12 years old, will be distributed to less fortunate children in the community through the First Capital Marine Corps League Toys for Tots program.
For the seventh consecutive year, Jimmy Clark, 23, of Red Lion, Pennsylvania will hold Poker with Jimmy, a No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 13. The tournament has raised about $60,000, over the past six years, for THON and the Four Diamonds Fund (through THON) at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for children battling pediatric cancer.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016-17 Penn State York Advising Award. Students may submit nominations for the award, which is presented at the Academic Awards Program in April of each year.
Penn State York will honor the veterans on campus during a noon lunch on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, in the community room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. Faculty, staff, students and members of the community are invited to show their support for veterans, enjoy a free lunch, and hear from two speakers.
