Fighting for his life is something Jimmy Clark, 25, understands well. A cancer survivor, Clark will host the ninth annual Poker with Jimmy, a No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 11. The tournament has raised more than $75,000 over the past eight years, for THON and the Four Diamonds Fund (through THON) at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for children battling pediatric cancer. This year’s event takes place at the Goodwill Fire Company, 2318 S. Queen St., York, Pennsylvania. Doors open at 10 a.m. with play beginning at 11 a.m.
The upcoming mid-term elections have everyone speculating who will win. Jon Price, lecturer in history and political science and Division of Undergraduate Studies adviser at Penn State York , will share his predictions during a presentation, “The Price is Right?’ from noon to 1 p.m. Friday Nov. 2, in the Lee R. Glatfelter Library. The event is free and open to the public.
Penn State York will host the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG) meeting Nov. 2 and 3. The two-day meeting brings together about 175 student leaders from the 19 commonwealth campuses across the state to meet and discuss a variety of topics from sustainability and student organizations to diversity and other topics pertaining to the University. This is the first time York has hosted the event which is open to any Penn State student. CCSG meets five times during the academic year.
There’s still time to donate to Santa for Soldiers and brighten the holidays for soldiers serving in the military. Penn State York’s Blue and White Society (BWS) has once again joined forces with the Penn State York Alumni Society (PSYAS), and Mt. Rose Barberama for “Santa for Solders” (SFS). The groups are working together to collect items, now through Sunday, Nov. 11 for U.S. Army National Guard soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
Penn State York continues its celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), Nov. 7–15, with a presentation by Kristina Groff, financial adviser at Everence, a financial services provider, at noon Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the rehearsal room of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center. Her presentation is sponsored by the Graham Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Studies (The Graham Center) on campus.
Penn State York’s Student Veterans of America (SVA), York Chapter, is once again sponsoring a Toys for Tots drive on campus. SVA has joined with the Marine Corps Reserve for this important project. New, unopened and unwrapped toys will be collected through Dec. 14.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018-19 Penn State York Advising Award. Students may submit nominations for the award, which is presented at the Academic Awards Program in April of each year.
Penn State York honored its veterans on Friday, Nov. 9 with a luncheon and program that was open to the campus community. The event was sponsored by Penn State York’s student veterans’ group, Student Veterans of America (SVA), York Chapter.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2018-19 James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is given annually to recognize any aspect of excellent instruction -- lectures, demonstrations, classroom activities, handling of discussions, individual attention, laboratory instruction, etc. -- that contributes to the academic quality of Penn State York.
