Deborah Eicher-Catt, professor in the communication arts and sciences at Penn State York; Shirley Moody-Turner, associate professor of English and African-American studies in the College of the Liberal Arts; and Craig R. Zabel, department head and associate professor of art history in College of Arts and Architecture; have received the Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching and have been named 2016 Penn State Teaching Fellows.

Give the gift of life at Penn State York blood drive

Penn State York, Fox 43, and the American Red Cross have joined together to ask area residents to bleed for a good cause. The American Red Cross is in need of blood and a community drive is set for Aug. 25 at Penn State York. The blood drive is from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building and is open to the public.

New students, those in University housing must submit immunization records

Students who are new to Penn State and all students living in University housing are reminded that they must submit their immunization records using myUHS through a new three-step process. As part of this process, students who do not submit their immunization records prior to Sept. 15 will be unable to register for spring 2017 classes.

Course designed to help students improve SAT scores

Designed to help high school students prepare to take the SAT, Penn State York’s SAT preparation course offers students a variety of test-taking strategies. The course meets from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on four consecutive Saturdays beginning Oct. 1. The four-session course meets in Room 112 of the Edward M. Elias Science Building.

New student center to open Oct. 12 at Penn State York

Excitement is mounting across campus at Penn State York, as the much-awaited grand opening of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center is set for noon on Oct. 12. The ceremony will take place in the new plaza area behind the John J. Romano Administration Building and The Ruhl Center, and is open to students, faculty, staff and invited guests. The building is opening after a $13.5 million renovation and addition.

York Pathways program to celebrate 20th anniversary on May 13

It was 20 years ago that Suzanne Gladfelter, a faculty member at Penn State York, now retired, decided to put together a program to encourage seventh-grade girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The name of the program changed several times through the years but the idea has not, and now, Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers, will celebrate 20 years on May 13 with 22 workshops and a special speaker to commemorate the event.

Emery receives advising award from National Academic Advising Association

Advising students is something that Jane Emery does very well, so well in fact that she was recently named the recipient of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Region 2 Certificate of Merit for Advising Administrator Award. Emery, director of advising and career development and coordinator of the Division of Undergraduate Studies at Penn State York, received her award during NACADA’s spring conference in Hyattsville, Maryland.

York Biology Club hopes to raise awareness about Huntington's disease

Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. Laura Ohl, a senior majoring in biology at Penn State York, wants people to know more about this disease and the work that is being done by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Ohl, the 2015-16 president of the Biology Club at Penn State York, and other members will take part in the fourth annual Central Pennsylvania Team Hope Walk, set for May 21 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
