Penn State York will celebrate the life and work of the late Martin Luther King Jr. with events and displays, during the week of Jan. 20 to 24. Beginning Monday, Jan. 20, posters featuring and illustrating some of King’s most memorable quotes will hang on the walls of buildings throughout the campus. The posters, designed by members of the Penn State York Diversity Committee, will help remind readers of King’s work. Also throughout the week, a selection of books, videos and electronic items about King and his efforts will be on display in the Lee R. Glatfelter Library on campus. All programs are free and open to the public.
Penn State York officially opened the new lion shrine plaza in front of the John J. Romano Administration Building. The building’s exterior had not been updated since the late 1950s and the newly renovated area includes a circular plaza area with seating, a water feature, new landscaping, stonework, and the Nittany lion statue on a pedestal, ready and waiting for those important photo opportunities.
Penn State Archivist Doris Malkmus will be traveling to Penn State campuses this fall to present “Queering Penn State History.” Using a game setting and primary sources from The Eberly Family Special Collections Library, she will help attendees discover the tumultuous history of Penn State’s first gay student organization, circa 1968–1974. The presentation is free and open to the public.
