Creative works of fiction, poetry, drama still being accepted for York contest

Writers of fiction, poetry and drama who are interested in having their work published or performed should plan to enter the Penn State York Literary Competition sponsored by the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) and “Any Other Word,” the campus’ online literary magazine. The competition is open to Penn State York students; submissions are being accepted through March 2.

Program to focus on fundamentals of cybersecurity

Cyberattacks are on the rise and businesses and organizations are looking for ways to keep their networks safe and secure. Penn State York’s Fundamentals of Cybersecurity program is designed to introduce the basic concepts of cybersecurity to new and emerging information technology professionals. The six-week course meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 26 to April 2, and is $595.

Discover the secrets of networking and building relationships

This program has been postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather. Building relationships, that’s what it's all about in today’s workplace. Cheryl Bonner, director of Alumni Career Services at Penn State, will share advice and resources for building those relationships during a presentation titled "How to Optimize Networking by Building Stronger Relationships" on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Penn State York. The free program, which is open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. in the Precision Custom Components (PCC) Community Room in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center on campus.

Campus to celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Pig, Feb. 5

Lunar New Year, sometimes referred to as Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, will be celebrated at Penn State York to usher in the Year of the Pig on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The festivities, from 12:15 until 1:30 p.m. in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building, are free and open to the campus community.

"Rover Ruckus," a theme in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. moon landing, is the name of the game when 54 teams of middle and high school students participate in the FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) South Central PA Regional Qualifier robotics competition on Feb. 2 and the Blue and White Qualifier on Feb. 3 at Penn State York.

A second session of the Self-Defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange Course Program for Women is being offered from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Penn State York. The free course is being offered by the Penn State York Police and Public Safety Department.

Personal experiences motivate students to put on their dancin' shoes for THON

Mother, uncle, friend — each of Penn State York’s THON dancers has experienced cancer though the loss of someone they knew well. Justin Neal lost his mother to cervical cancer eight years ago. Yaribeth Ocasio lost her uncle to prostate cancer, and Kelsey Haines lost a friend and former Penn State York student to leukemia. All three will represent their campus in the fight against pediatric cancer at the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, Feb. 15-17 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Spring nominations open for 2018-19 Burness Teaching Award

Spring nominations are being accepted for the 2018-19 James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is given annually to recognize any aspect of excellent instruction — lectures, demonstrations, classroom activities, handling of discussions, individual attention, laboratory instruction, etc. — that contributes to the academic quality of Penn State York.
