Serving Transgender Communities in Health Care (HDFS 5064)

This one-day workshop will lead participants to a thorough understanding of the transgender community, and how to build trust with your transgender patients. Participants will hear best practice terminology and inclusive language, describe risk and protective factors, learn about the increased risks of domestic violence and community intervention resources, recognize cisheterosexism, and identify steps to make your organization and its practices more welcoming and inclusive.

This course is intended for nurses, and others in health-related fields including social workers, home health care, nursing homes, assisted living and personal care homes, and those with direct care support.

Training Hours

This training has been approved for 8 contact hours training for the following:

  • Nursing Continuing Professional Development (RN). Penn State College of Nursing is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited provider by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Presenters, organizers, and content specialists have indicated no conflict of interest. Participants with a valid RN license who attend the entire session will be awarded 8 contact hours of nursing continuing professional development; partial contact hours are not awarded.

Katherine Dalke, MD

Keynote: Katherine Dalke, MD

Dr. Dalke is a psychiatrist at the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute in Harrisburg with clinical focus on the psychiatric care and support of LGBTQ and intersex adolescents and adults, and a provider in the integrated Gender Health Clinic at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. As an assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the office for culturally responsive health care education at the Penn State College of Medicine, Dr. Dalke’s academic work centers on LGBTQ/intersex mental health and cultural competency. She has won several teaching awards and serves on national and international committees devoted to LGBTQ/intersex health. Dr. Dalke is also a longtime advocate for people with intersex traits and has been recognized with appointment to the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs and community advocacy awards.

Dr. Dalke graduated from Haverford College, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she also earned a Masters in Bioethics. She trained in Psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, with additional clinical training in transgender health at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She held a faculty appointment and served as the director for sex and gender curriculum at Penn before joining the faculty at Penn State. Dr. Dalke lives near Harrisburg with her spouse and two children.

JoAnn Carroll

Executive Director of Trans Advocacy Pennsylvania

Joanne M. Carroll is the executive director of Trans Advocacy Pennsylvania; a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs; the Immediate past president of TransCentralPA, and is the past president and past vice president of EqualityPA. She serves as a consultant to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and is a member of the Governors’ LGBT Working Group, the Millersville University - President’s Commission on Gender and Sexual Diversity, and is the co-chair of the Keystone Conference, “A Celebration of Gender Diversity.” Carroll is a member of the Transgender American Veterans Association, having served twenty years on active duty in the United States Airforce. She is a rated Air Force master instructor and is a Vietnam era veteran. She received many awards and decorations during her military career that included; Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Cara Exten, Ph.D., MPH

Assistant Professor, College of Nursing
The Pennsylvania State University

Cara Exten is an assistant professor in the College of Nursing. She is an infectious disease epidemiologist, with a focus on health disparities affecting sexual and gender minority populations. Her program of research is focused specifically on disparities related to sexual health (e.g. HIV and sexually transmitted infections) and substance use. She has extensive experience in survey data collection, the application of advanced statistical methods, and working with high-risk populations. She is passionate about the examination of diseases in their entirety, including biological, sociological and epidemiological factors.

Amy K. Keisling, ACSW, LCSW, BCD

Coordinator, Gender Health Clinic
Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center

Amy Keisling is a licensed clinical social worker with more than thirty years of experience working with individuals, couples and families. She earned a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College and received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. A member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the primary focus of her work has been in the provision of gender-affirming care to transgender and gender-expansive people. Keisling recently left the world of private clinical practice to become the coordinator for the new pediatric and adolescent Gender Health Clinic at Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, serving the needs of transgender and gender-expansive children, adolescents, young adults, and their families.
