New students will receive their official welcome to campus during Penn State York’s Convocation set for Friday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center). The program includes welcoming remarks from David W. Chown, chancellor at Penn State York; Robert Farrell, director of academic affairs; Fulgentius Lugemwa, chairperson the Penn State York Campus Senate; and Colin Miller, Student Government Association president.
Joan Smeltzer, instructor in mathematics at Penn State York, has been named the recipient of the Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award for 2017. This is a University-wide award with two recipients, one at University Park and one at a Commonwealth Campus.
Penn State York’s men’s baseball team had to win against Penn State Worthington Scranton in order to advance to the playoffs in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC). The team needed to win one of two games in a doubleheader on April 26. Not only did they win one, York swept the doubleheader and clinched the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Division of the PSUAC.
Summer classes offer students a chance to get ahead for fall, catch up on classes, or just get started. The first summer session begins May 15 and continues through June 23, while the second summer session begins June 28 and runs through Aug. 9.
Penn State York will celebrate its 47th annual spring commencement at 6 p.m. Friday, May 5, in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center at the campus. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Shannon McCully, manager, industrial engineering, supporting global marketing and sales at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Orlando, Florida, is the commencement speaker.
Franco Harris, former Penn State Nittany Lion football player, Steeler Super bowl champ, and Pro Football Hall of Famer, is headed to the area to take part in Penn State York’s ninth annual clay shoot event with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20. The event takes place at Central Penn Sporting Clays (CPSC) in Wellsville, Pennsylvania.
Educational and fun activities related to neuroscience, mental health, psychology and learning are set for April 5, when Penn State York celebrates Brain Awareness Day. The event, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building, is free and open to the public.
Networking is the key when it comes to finding a job that ultimately leads to a career. Penn State York students and alumni who graduated in the past five years have the opportunity to network with business professionals, many of whom are Penn State alumni, in a variety of career fields, during the annual career networking event March 30.
When Magdalen Matthews, a communication arts and sciences major at Penn State York, returned from the alternative spring break trip to the Bahamas last year, she was determined to seek more international service opportunities for students to put their spring break to good use.
Penn State York will host the 34th annual York County Science and Engineering Fair from March 6-8 in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building. About 200 projects will be judged during the event. Projects are open for public view from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on March 8.
