Convocation set for Aug. 18 at Penn State York

New students will receive their official welcome to campus during Penn State York’s Convocation set for Friday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center). The program includes welcoming remarks from David W. Chown, chancellor at Penn State York; Robert Farrell, director of academic affairs; Fulgentius Lugemwa, chairperson the Penn State York Campus Senate; and Colin Miller, Student Government Association president.

As part of the week-long 2017 International Student Orientation at Penn State York, Aug. 14-18, students had the opportunity to have some fun and attend a picnic at John Rudy Park in York, Pennsylvania.  Students enjoyed food, played games, and showed off their Kan-Jam skills.

Francyou Desse, a Penn State York student, was one of the many donors happy to give blood during the 2016 community blood drive. The drive, a partnership between the campus, the American Red Cross and Fox 43, will be held this year from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building at Penn State York.

A $50,000 seed grant from Invent Penn State has provided funds for the makerspace and the Start-Up Challenge. Nordic Dancers of Washington, D.C.

Teaching International at Penn State York kicks off the academic year with a free performance by the Nordic Dancers of Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center).  The group will perform cultural dances, and offer an opportunity for audience members to learn some dance steps.

Ten members of the faculty and staff at Penn State York took advantage of the voluntary retirement program offered through the University.  Those who retired on June 30, 2017, are, left to right, Charles "Chuck" Gaston, Sandy Shellenberger, Jane Emery, Orsay Kucukemiroglu, Michael Jarrett, Abul Hasan, Annie Haines, Cora Dzubak and Kerry Magni. Ken Swalgin, who also retired, was unable to attend the event, and is not pictured. This group of retirees represent 276 years of combined service to the University.

York faculty member honored with Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award

Joan Smeltzer, instructor in mathematics at Penn State York, has been named the recipient of the Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award for 2017. This is a University-wide award with two recipients, one at University Park and one at a Commonwealth Campus.
