York faculty member honored with Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award

Joan Smeltzer, instructor in mathematics at Penn State York, has been named the recipient of the Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award for 2017. This is a University-wide award with two recipients, one at University Park and one at a Commonwealth Campus.

Trisha Prabhu, a 16-year-old tech innovator, social entrepreneur, advocate, and inventor of ReThink, an app to help prevent cyberbullying, is the special speaker at Pathways to Your Future Exploring STEAM Careers at Penn State York. She has been named the WebMD Hero of the Year for 2016 and appeared on "Shark Tank" and rceived a joint offer from Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner

Seventh grade girls from 27 schools will gather at Penn State York for Pathways to Your Future Exploring STEAM Careers on Friday, May 12.  The program, in its twenty-first year, is a carer awareness program highlighting opportunities in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).  One of the most popular workshops at the event is The Science of Color in Cosmetics, where participants get to create their own color nail polish, and discover the science around it.

Educational and fun activities related to neuroscience, mental health, psychology and learning are set for April 5, when Penn State York celebrates Brain Awareness Day. The event, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building, is free and open to the public.

Penn State York students, faculty, staff, and members of the York community are invited to put their brains to work on Wednesday, April 5 when the campus celebrates Brain Awareness Day from 12-1:30 p.m. in the conference center of the Main Classroom Building.  The event is free and open to the public.

York Pathways program to celebrate 20th anniversary on May 13

It was 20 years ago that Suzanne Gladfelter, a faculty member at Penn State York, now retired, decided to put together a program to encourage seventh-grade girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The name of the program changed several times through the years but the idea has not, and now, Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers, will celebrate 20 years on May 13 with 22 workshops and a special speaker to commemorate the event.

Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, a retired NASA astronaut, will be the featured speaker for the 20th anniversary celebration for Pathways to the Future: Exploring STEM Careers, set for Friday, May 13, at Penn State York.

One of the 22 workshops at Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers is offered by the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland, giving students the opportunity to dissect a squid and learn how the creature is able to survive in the ocean. Not for the squeamish, "Marine Science Exploration: How is a Squid Able to Survive in the Ocean?" is one of the program's most popular workshops.
