We Are . . . supporting victims of Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey brought devastation to Houston, Texas, and many other towns along the Gulf Coast. For Dan Puccio, associate direct of student affairs at Penn State York, the photos on the news and social media reminded him of the catastrophic loss in New Orleans, a place he used to live and work. Although he wasn’t in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, Puccio remembers seeing the impact on that city and its residents years later. Those memories, shared with him by friends and colleagues who lived through Katrina, inspired him to do something.

Dana Vandergrift, Penn State York’s head women’s volleyball coach, is a firm believer in building confidence in her players; there’s no room for negativity. Vandergrift, and her 13-member squad, opens the 2017 season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Penn State Schuylkill. York’s home opener is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, against Penn State Mont Alto.

Penn State’s NSF I-Corps program seeks applications by Sept. 15 and Oct. 15

The National Science Foundation has joined in supporting Penn State’s goal of taking more of its discoveries to market by awarding Penn State a five-year, $500,000 Innovation Corps (I-Corps) grant to establish the Invent Penn State I-Corps Site in collaboration with Ben Franklin Technology Partner’s TechCelerator, Happy Valley LaunchBox, and Invent Penn State’s Innovation Hubs.

Distracted driving simulator on campus Sept. 7

Get behind the wheel of a real-life drunk driving and texting simulator, and experience the impact that alcohol and texting has on your ability to drive safely, when Penn State York hosts UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour on Sept. 7. The simulator will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., near the lower entrance to the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center).

Trivia event focuses on knowledge of U.S. history, celebrates Constitution Day

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 men on Sept. 17, 1787, and celebrates the birthday of the government of the United States of America. Penn State York will celebrate Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 18, with the fourth annual "WE ARE the People" trivia event at noon in the community room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Constitution Day celebration at Penn State York small but informative

Penn State York celebrated Constitution Day with a trivia event on Sept. 18, and while the group was small, those who attended had an opportunity to test their knowledge of U.S. history and have some fun. Valerie Carrington, a Penn State York student majoring in English, was the winner of a bucket of patriotic prize items, and a Starbucks gift card.

Groups join forces to make the holidays brighter for soldiers in Afghanistan

Penn State York’s Blue and White Society has once again joined forces with the Penn State York Alumni Society, the Consolidated School for Business Community Service Club, and Mt. Rose Barberama for "Santa for Solders." The groups are working together to collect items, now through Nov. 11, for U.S. Army National Guard soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
